Lions sign hockey star
We’re delighted to announce the signing of former Welsh Hockey international, Maggs Rees.
A product of the esteemed sports (and educational) institution that is Millfield School, Rees was a stalwart in the Welsh national side for nearly 16 years after being scouted directly from school as a goalkeeper. Amassing over 80 senior caps, Rees has represented her country at the Commonwealth Games (Delhi), the World Cup (Argentina) and is a previous European Champion; she’s also, pleasingly, UoB alumni courtesy of a BSc in Sports & Materials Science (awarded in 2003).
“I’m loving American Football already, and in particular running with the ball, which is especially exciting after spending so many years stuck in the goalmouth” joked Rees. “The Lions are a really solid unit and seem to have mastered the elusive art of having a good time whilst still giving everything on the pitch.”
An extremely useful addition to the squad, Rees brings high level sports’ experience and a cool-head to proceedings but also a considerable amount of toughness too. A Welsh rugby international at U19 level also Rees earned her spurs as a flanker, and so knows the meaning of both graft and how to grab the hard yards. “Maggs offers the Lions a lot of potential, not just as a seasoned athlete who’s played at the highest level” commented Head Coach Jamie Kilby, “but as a player who’s brave by nature – playing goalie takes guts and courage which is just the sort of skill-set we like our Lions to both possess and demonstrate.”
Rees will make her South team debut this Saturday just in time for round two of BAFA’s Sapphire Series. We say: “Welcome Maggs” and all the very best for your inaugural season ahead.
