Birmingham Lions v Chorley Buccaneers: May 9th 2015
In the 3rd game of the season Birmingham Lions took on Chorley Buccaneers. The game started with the Lions defense taking to the field and forcing the Bucs to punt the ball.
The Lions met the same fate and were soon punting the ball too. A bad snap made good by good kicking by #22 Joe Griffiths, followed by #02 Josh Lawrence who got downfield quickly to stop the returner.
A fumble recovery by the defense gave the ball back to the Lions O, which they were unable to capitalise with a turnover on downs. The Lions D continued to pile on the pressure; a big hit by #39 Greg Speakman followed by pressure on the QB by. nearly leading to an interception. The Bucs punting the ball away gain. On the next Lions drive, #02 Josh Lawrence pulled in a catch with good YAC, followed by #82Warren Davis moving the ball on the ground another 15 yards. #34 Tom Goodall then ran for over 30 yards just falling short near the goaline. The drive was finished with a little swing pass out to #05 who took the ball in at the corner of the endzone. (6-0).
From the kick-off, the Bucs were stopped close to their own goal line. Their next play ended with as safety by #39 Greg Speakman (8-0).
There followed an exchange of possessions leading to the Lions next score; a 22yard pass to #02, who then ran the ball in from the hallway line for the score. The 2pt conversion completed by #82 Warren Davis. (16-0). The Bucs next drive ended in a punt. The Lions were soon moving the ball downfield again with good work from #34 Tom Goodall, #15 Dan Thewlis. A swing pass to #82 saw him run in the 10 yards for the score; the conversion completed by #05 Jake Winwood (24-0). Having taken a little while to get rolling, the Lions Express was now definitely on the move and heading for 3-0. The next Bucs drive saw a sack from #51 Sam Taylor and some great down field covering by #10 George Katoga which prevented the Bucs first score of the day. The half ended with the score Birmingham Lions: 24 Chorley Buccaneers 0.
The second half began with Chorley kicking off, the short kick only reaching #51 Sam Taylor who returned the ball 20 yards. A wayward snapped went into the arms of #05 Jake Winwood, who carried the ball 30 yards for the score; aided near the goaline by a massive block by #64 Liam Murray. Jake then completed the 2pt conversion. (32-0).
On the next Bucs drive the D took the ball away; #32 on the interception. A change at QB for the Lions #13 Ashley Bailey taking over; and another score with Ash linking with #15 Dan Thewlis for a 15 yard pass. (38-0). The Lions defense continued to pile the pressure on Chorley, determined not to give up the score. A sack by #51 Sam Taylor deep into Chorley territory put the ball back into Ash’s hands who then looked to have scored in the corner but the officials marked it just short. Chorley worked hard but just could not keep out a hard running Jake Winwood for another score; the 2pt conversion completed by Ash Bailey. (46-0). The Chorley drive saw more pressure form the Lions D; a sack by #53 Cameron Dean on the Chorley 3 yard line left them in deep trouble, punting the ball away again. Ash continued to run the game in his own style. The only Chorley score came from a fumbled snap which went into the endzone and one of their players landed on it. (46-6).
