Years on Staff: 1st year

Coaching Experience:
Newcastle Raiders – DB/OLB
Gateshead Senators – DB/OLB

Matt started his playing career at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne
having previously played county rugby. Here he studied Marine Biology and a Masters meant 4 years playing football for the Newcastle Raiders, enjoying success at Safety and Outside linebacker. Matt spent 2 years as Defensive Captain, winning “Defensive player of the year” in his final year.

Honours included 2 years at Northern Allstars (FS) and 2 years representingGreat Britain for the Bulldogs, including a tour to LA, which led to full University Royals being awarded upon departure. This final year was also where he started his coaching career as play-er/coach to the Raiders defensive backs. Part way through these 4 years at Newcastle, Matt began his Senior league career with the Gateshead Senators. Here he played the majority of the time at Safety and OLB however in latter years also turned his hand to offense, including a stint at QB in an option system.

Matt was elected club captain for 5 years at Gateshead Senators and the hard work paid off when he was selected for the GB Lions squad for the European Championships in Frankfurt. This then led to further success as he was signed by the GFL Lubeck Cougars to a seasonal contract in a season which led to their promotion to the top GFL division. Having served 10 years by the Tyne, Matt has recently moved to Birmingham with his girlfriend Alex, and is very much looking forward to being a part of the famous Lions family (although the accent may take some acclimatisation from the aforementioned Geordie).

He will be coaching the Strong Outside Linebackers using his experience in both coverage and run stopping situations alike to make this athletic unit one to be feared by opposing offenses.
